Rollover blocks Toronto-bound QEW at Gilmore Road

A rollover crash on the QEW at Gilmore Road in Fort Erie left an SUV in the highway’s grass median Friday morning and prompted a call for an air ambulance.

The crash blocked both Toronto-bound lanes of the highway, police said. Ontario 511, the province’s traffic information service, listed the Toronto-bound on-ramp at Gilmore Road closed from 9:38 a.m. and had lifted the closure by 10:45 a.m.

Ontario Provincial Police, which patrols the QEW, had not told Fort Erie Radio by publication how many people were hurt or how the SUV ended up in the median.

Fort Erie council asked the province in June 2024 to install a guide rail or cable barrier along the QEW’s grass median between Niagara Falls and Fort Erie.

Councillor Nick Dubanow’s motion warned that the narrow median could not stop vehicles from crossing into oncoming traffic, a risk it said had grown with traffic volumes on the highway.

A Rockwood transport truck driver, 54, died on October 3, 2024, when his truck struck the median near Netherby Road and rolled over.

A Stevensville woman, 64, suffered injuries police called potentially life-altering on October 20, 2024, when her vehicle rolled across the median near Sodom Road into the Fort Erie-bound ditch.

The Ministry of Transportation said in July 2024 it would review that stretch’s collision history to decide whether barriers could make it safer, but gave no date for finishing the review.
