Transport truck driver killed on QEW near Netherby Road

A 54-year-old male transport truck driver from Rockwood, Ontario, died Thursday morning on the Queen Elizabeth Way near Netherby Road.

The single-vehicle collision was reported to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) at 8:10 a.m., Sergeant Ted Dongelmans told Fort Erie Radio at about 11:45 a.m., also confirming the driver was killed in the incident.

An Ornge air ambulance responded and landed on the highway but did not take the driver to hospital.

“The driver was pronounced dead while they were at the scene,” said Dongelmans.

The transport was Fort Erie bound before it entered the centre median, a grassy ditch, and then rolled onto its side.

It contents spilled into the Toronto-bound lanes.

He did not have confirmation, but said he believes the truck was hauling wheat or grains.

The highway remains closed between Bowen and Netherby roads and will be for “several hours,” Dongelmans said shortly before noon, adding an extensive cleanup will need to take place.

The incident remains under investigation.
