GFESS football program ‘good and strong’ headed into season

The junior and senior football programs at Greater Fort Erie Secondary School (GFESS) are preparing for kickoff.
Training camp has been taking place for the last three weeks and there will be about 80 players combined between both squads, head coach Dave Sauer told Fort Erie Radio in an interview on Friday.
“Our program is pretty good and strong, which is nice,” he said referring to the high turnout each year.
The senior team finished the 2024 regular season 2-2 and lost in the semifinals to Sir Winston Churchill when the postseason arrived.
The junior team, consisting of Grade 9 and 10 students, finished 1-3 and was beaten in the semifinals to A.N. Myer, who went on to win the provincial title.
But Sauer is looking ahead positively to the upcoming 2025 season, which has been increased to a six-game schedule.
“I think we look good,” said Sauer, adding there are a number of returning veterans on the senior roster.
The junior squad is more about player development as opposed to the season record.
“The new kids coming in, we’re really excited to work with them and get them onboard,” said Sauer.
The exhibition action kicks off September 11 at GFESS with the regular season starting the following week.
The date and times of home games at GFESS varies this year, based on the availability of referees, said Sauer.
