Barbecue fire destroys trailer at Ridgeway campground

A barbecue fire destroyed a trailer at a Ridgeway campground Saturday evening and injured at least one person.

The blaze broke out at Daiva RV Resorts on Gorham Road, the campground formerly known as Knight’s Hideaway Trailer Park. Niagara Regional Police and Fort Erie volunteer firefighters were called at about 6:40 p.m. on September 5.

Fire Chief Mark Schmitt told Fort Erie Radio the fire started at a barbecue and spread to the trailer’s deck before consuming the unit.

Crews had the fire under control in about 40 minutes and remained on scene for about two hours.

The trailer’s owner burned his hand while trying to shut the barbecue off after someone noticed flames underneath it, Schmitt said.

Niagara Regional Police confirmed two occupants suffered minor injuries while trying to put out the fire. Police deemed the fire not suspicious.

Schmitt is urging residents and seasonal campers to check barbecue hoses for cracks every year and to test propane connections with soapy water before lighting the grill.
