Fort Erie commuters to face overnight lane closures this week

Fort Erie commuters will find themselves navigating several lane closures and construction zones this week as provincial crews work on key highways across the Niagara region.

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation’s 511 road reports say a pair of alternating lane reductions will squeeze the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) between Maple Avenue and Bartlett Avenue in Grimsby.

Two lanes on the Fort Erie‑bound side are scheduled to be closed overnight from Monday evening through to early Friday morning as crews complete a construction project.

In Niagara Falls, a recurring construction project on the QEW is set to close the right lane in the Fort Erie‑bound direction at Mountain Road.

According to Ontario 511, the closure will begin on Tuesday evening and run overnight until early Saturday morning. Motorists should plan for reduced capacity and possible slow‑downs approaching the interchange.

Highway 58 north of Thorold will be down to a single lane at night due to an engineering investigation.

Ontario 511 warns that both the right and left lanes of the northbound side between Thorold Stone Road/Davis Road and Highway 406 will close overnight from Tuesday to Friday, leaving traffic alternating through the remaining lane. Drivers between Welland and Thorold should expect minor delays and obey flagpersons at the site.

Along Highway 406, multiple lane restrictions are planned through St. Catharines and Thorold.

One lane of the southbound highway between Highway 20/Canboro Road and Holland Road in Thorold will be closed from Tuesday evening until early Saturday morning.

A right‑lane closure is also scheduled northbound between Decew Road and Sir Isaac Brock Way during the same period.

In St. Catharines, an alternating lane will be shut between the QEW and Highway 58, and a southbound right lane between Third Avenue and First Street will also be closed, with both restrictions running overnight from Tuesday until early Saturday.

Several long‑term projects continue to affect local traffic.

Construction work on the QEW between Ridgemount Road and Concession Road in Fort Erie reduces traffic to one alternating lane, and the Fort Erie‑bound off‑ramp at Bertie Street/Thompson Road remains under construction. These long‑running closures began in August and are slated to continue into December.

The Ministry advises travellers to watch for workers and obey posted signage through all construction zones.
