Ridgeway supplier cuts prices for flood-hit Niagara homeowners

A Ridgeway building supplier is offering discounted flooring, insulation, doors and furnaces to Niagara home and business owners rebuilding after this month’s floods, but applicants must prove their address and their losses to qualify.

DB Building Materials on Ridge Road North launched its flood relief program after back-to-back storms flooded homes across the region, pushed St. Catharines to declare a state of emergency and left many local homeowners hauling ruined belongings to the curb.

The program is open only to home and business owners in Niagara Region. Buyers must show proof of address and proof of damage.

The first relief special runs until August 30 and drops the price of six-millimetre luxury vinyl plank flooring to $1.69 per square foot. The deal requires a minimum order of one skid, which covers 1,450 square feet.

DB Building Materials said discounted prices on drywall, insulation, doors and trim will follow. The wider program also covers bathroom fixtures, furnaces and air conditioning units.

In an August 15 social media post, DB Building Materials shared a Niagara Regional Police Service alert about fake restoration services operating in St. Catharines, where scammers posing as restoration companies and junk removal crews have tried to get inside homes to search for valuables.

“There are scammers out there that are taking advantage of people who are already in a tough spot right now,” DB Building Materials said in the post, urging residents to triple-check that any contractor they hire is reputable and insured.

Police advise residents to get recommendations from people they trust, confirm a contractor’s insurance before work begins, check references and treat unsolicited phone calls or door-to-door offers with suspicion.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted by a restoration scam can call police at (905) 688-4111.

DB Building Materials program adds a private option to a recovery effort that has so far leaned on municipalities and volunteers.

Half of Niagara’s 12 towns and cities temporarily expanded curbside pickup of flood-ruined household items, and tipping fees were waived until August 15 at regional drop-off sites, including the Bridge Street depot in Fort Erie.
