Three of four beaches in town deemed unsafe for swimming

Only one of four public beaches in Greater Fort Erie is currently considered safe for swimming.

According to Niagara Region Public Health’s beach testing webpage, Bernard Avenue Beach is the lone spot in town where entering the water is deemed safe.

Bay Beach, Crescent Beach, and Waverly Beach, have all been flagged due to high E. coli levels, determined by testing that took place July 8.

According to public health guidelines, water is considered unsafe for swimming when bacteria levels exceed thresholds that increase the risk of illness, such as stomach cramps, diarrhea and skin infections.

Bay Beach, a popular tourist destination, was considered safe on June 29, but was also said to have E. coli levels too high for swimming a week before that.

Testing is conducted regularly throughout the summer at public beaches across the region. Water conditions can change quickly due to weather, wave activity, wildlife, and other factors.

The region advises swimmers to check recent test results before entering the water.

Fort Erie Radio reached out to the Town of Fort Erie to ask if measures are in place on-site at Bay Beach to notify guests of the water conditions.

Communications staff said the town suggests checking the region’s webpage to check it before swimming.

They also said the region’s link is featured on the Bay Beach passes and admission page on the town’s website.

“Anyone looking to purchase a beach pass will see the link as they scroll down,” said town communications staff.

If beachgoers do not purchase tickets beforehand, the town has signage indicating that the beach is monitored, which includes information about the region’s website.

Beachgoers are “encouraged to check the conditions before visiting,” and that “they swim at their discretion.”
