Fort Erie named Canada’s third most charitable community

Fort Erie is among the country’s best when it comes to generous residents.

According to CanadaHelps, Canada’s leading online platform for donating and fundraising, the border town is ranked third out of the top 10 charitable communities across all 10 provinces and three territories, among the most populated 200 municipalities.

This is based on donations made using CanadaHelps, says a news release about the results.

The release says that 5.27 per cent of Fort Erie’s population have contributed to causes using the platform in 2024, jumping up from the fourth spot it was given in 2023.

For the second year in a row, Centre Wellington, Ont. is at the top of the list and Collingwood, Ont. is second, according to the news release on Canada Newswire.

In fourth place is North Vancouver, B.C., and the fifth most generous community per capita in Canada is Victoria, B.C.

The remaining top communities are Fredericton, N.B., St. John’s, NFLD., Whitehorse, YT, Waterloo, Ont., and Brant, Ont.

“It is wonderful to see so many smaller cities ranked high on the list of Canada’s most generous communities this year, highlighting how communities can rally together to make a big impact,” said Duke Chang, president and chief executive officer of CanadaHelps.

“As we head into the end of the year, CanadaHelps is calling on all Canadians to give what they can this holiday season to support causes close to their hearts or make an impact in their local community, whether they choose to donate, volunteer, or engage in other forms of generosity,” added Chang.

One example of local generosity is the 2024 COPE Christmas Cash Split, an ongoing 50/50 raffle hosted by Fort Erie Radio.

Tickets are available for purchase until 8:30 a.m. on December 20 and proceeds will support Community Outreach Program Erie, a local food bank.
