Fort Erie landfill giving away free compost for a can of food

Niagara Region will hand out free compost at its Bridge Street depot in Fort Erie from September 28 to October 3, in exchange for a cash or food donation to the local food bank.

Every donation collected at the Bridge Street Residential Drop-Off Depot, at 1300 Bridge Street, goes to Community Outreach Program Erie (COPE), a local food bank that serves more than 600 people a month.

Each household can take home a maximum of three 20-litre bags a day, though depot staff will decide how many bags of compost a donation earns. Residents must load the bags into their own vehicles.

Niagara Region opens the Bridge Street depot Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Region staff asks residents to come on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, to avoid the lineups on peak days.

Niagara Region makes the compost out of the yard waste and food scraps its crews collect at the curb, which spares that material from the landfill.

Fort Erie residents can also collect compost at the Humberstone Landfill in Welland that same week. The Niagara Road 12 Landfill in West Lincoln will serve only residents of Grimsby, Pelham, Lincoln and West Lincoln.

COPE accepts perishable and non-perishable food, baby formula, diapers, hygiene products, toiletries and cleaning supplies.

Anyone who misses the giveaway can drop the same items at COPE’s building at 32 Dufferin Street, which is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m

The giveaway ends October 3, or sooner if compost runs out.
