Garrison Road resurfacing closes two lanes in Fort Erie until early October

Two of the four lanes on Garrison Road in Fort Erie will stay closed during working hours until early October.

Niagara Region said crews resurfacing the road between Rose Hill Road and Helena Street will keep one lane open in each direction and reopen all four at the end of each working day.

Rankin Construction started the job on July 27. Fort Erie Radio has received reports of traffic backing up around Garrison Road at Thompson Road and Helena Street since then.

Mike Keller, a project manager with Niagara Region Transportation Services, said the Region expects no further lane closures or delays before the work ends.

“At present, we are not anticipating any delays or additional closures,” Keller said in a written response to Fort Erie Radio.

Crews have begun stripping asphalt at the Thompson Road intersection. They will remove 50 millimetres of the old surface along Garrison Road as far as Rose Hill Road, adjust or rebuild the manholes sitting in the driving lanes, then lay new asphalt and repaint the lane markings.

The contract also replaces the traffic detection sensors embedded in the pavement on Garrison Road at Pettit Road and at the Walmart entrance with radar units mounted above the road.

Every driveway will be passable by the end of each work day, and bus stops will stay open, Keller said.

Garrison Road is one part of Rankin Construction’s $5.3-million contract under the Region’s 2026 pavement preservation program, which already covered finished paving on Thompson Road near the CN Railroad bridge and on Phipps Street between Crooks Road and Niagara Boulevard.

Thorold Stone Road between Portage Road and Stanley Avenue in Niagara Falls is the last stretch of road left to pave as part of that project.
