A 63-year-old Fort Erie man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after he lost control of his electric scooter on the Friendship Trail Friday afternoon, Niagara police say.
Police said Saturday there is no evidence at this time that another vehicle was involved. The Niagara Regional Police Service Collision Reconstruction Unit has taken over the investigation into the crash, which happened at about 1:40 p.m. on July 31.
Uniform officers from the service’s Fort Erie district responded to the collision on the trail. Paramedics took the Fort Erie man to a hospital outside the Niagara region for treatment.
Police have released no other details about the crash, including the exact location, the type of electric scooter or what caused the man to lose control.
Posts in public Fort Erie Facebook groups on Friday described police activity on the trail between Buffalo Road and Crescent Road, in the Crescent Park area.
Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the collision, or who has dash camera or other video from the area around 1:40 p.m. Friday, to call (905) 688-4111. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Niagara.
The Town of Fort Erie’s parks and beaches bylaw, passed by council last April, prohibits motorized vehicles on the trail. The town’s trail rules list e-bikes among prohibited vehicles and permit motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters that assist people with disabilities.
The town completed a safety study of the trail’s 17 road crossings in 2024, including the crossings at Buffalo Road and Crescent Road. The study recommended high-visibility bollards, cleared sightlines, advance warning signs and painted yield lines at crossings.
Staff planned to start with the highest-priority work because the full recommendations exceed the approved budget, according to the town’s project page.

Hope the man injured recovers quickly. This is another example of how dangerous these electric bikes have become because of carelessness, speed and ignorance of others. Today we saw probably, about 12 yr old, NO HELMUT, ride and electric bike on Concession road. No helmut, speed and unaware of his surroundings. How does one control this⁉️⁉️
