Fort Erie asks residents to check their voter registration status

The Town of Fort Erie is asking residents to confirm they are on the Ontario voters’ list ahead of the 2026 municipal and school board election–the first local election to include online ballots.

Residents can check their registration through Elections Ontario’s online portal, where they can also update their name or address, add themselves to the list or remove outdated information. The town says accurate information now will prevent problems at the polls this fall.

Council has adopted a hybrid voting model for this election. Voters can cast a ballot online or mark a traditional paper ballot in person.

Internet voting opens October 5 until polls close on election day October 26 at 8 p.m. Online voters will need a 16-digit personal identification number and their date of birth.

Eligible voters will be sent a voter notification letter by mail before the election. The letter contains the PIN, access to the online voting platform, polling location details and an identification barcode. In-person voters are directed to bring the letter and acceptable identification, such as an Ontario driver’s licence, a utility bill or a property tax assessment.

Photo identification is not required, and a voter on the list who arrives without ID can sign a declaration of identity instead.

To vote, a person must be a Canadian citizen, be 18 or older and live in Fort Erie, own or rent property in town or be the spouse of an owner or tenant. Residents aged 16 and 17 can sign up through the Ontario Register of Future Voters and will move onto the voters’ list automatically when they turn 18.

Advance polls will be held October 14 and October 17 at the Fort Erie Leisureplex banquet hall from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. On election day, polls will be open during the same hours.

The formal revision period for the voters’ list begins September 1, when electors can still update or add their names before voting starts. After that date, changes must go through the town clerk, with a final deadline at the close of voting on October 26.
