Fort Erie students among 67 honoured at Brock scholarship reception

Everyone knows that post-secondary education comes at a cost.

To help defray those costs, Brock University started a program to present $2,500 entrance scholarships to two graduating students from almost every public, Catholic and private secondary school in Niagara.

67 recipients of Brock’s Niagara Principal’s Scholarships were honoured at a reception on May 15.

Local Fort Erie winners included Jiajun Gao and Haocheng Li from Fort Erie International Academy, as well as Emma Penny and Lyndsay Horton from Greater Fort Erie Secondary School.

Brock University celebrated its scholarship recipients with a special reception, which welcomed more than 100 additional students interested in learning more about their next steps after receiving acceptance letters to Brock.

In addition to the scholarships, recipients received a gift backpack stocked with Brock University merchandise.

The $167,500 scholarship pool is awarded based on a combination of academic achievement, community involvement, financial need, and is chosen by principals from each high school. Since the program’s inception in 2015, it has provided over $1.4 million to local high school graduates.

“We are incredibly proud to support and recognize the outstanding achievements of these bright young minds through the Niagara Principal’s Scholarships,” said Geraldine Jones, Brock’s registrar and associate vice-president of enrolment services.

“This event highlights our commitment to investing in the future leaders of Niagara.”
