Where to see Canada Day fireworks in Fort Erie

Fort Erie’s annual Canada Day fireworks are planned to light up the Niagara River near Old Fort Erie at 10 p.m. this Wednesday, June 1.

Fort Erie Festivals and the Town of Fort Erie organize the event, with the best viewing along the Niagara Parkway between Mather Arch and Old Fort Erie. Lakeshore Road closes between Beatrice Street and Dominion Road at 8 p.m., and parking is banned on Beatrice Street.

The fireworks are the only part of the old Fort Erie Friendship Festival that still continues. That festival ran each summer from 1987 to 2019 and once filled the riverfront from Mather Arch to Old Fort Erie with a carnival midway, an air show and concerts.

Bob Brown, a Fort Erie Festivals board member, told Fort Erie Radio last year that the fireworks show typically costs about $1,000 per minute and lasts 13 to 15 minutes.

Environment Canada calls for a mostly clear Wednesday with a high near 29 C and a 10 per cent chance of rain. If a storm does move in, the fireworks will be rescheduled to Thursday, July 2.

Earlier Wednesday, a free festival will be held in Ferndale Park from 3 to 10 p.m., the first Canada Day event of its kind in town since the Friendship Festival ended, organized by Matt Goch Real Estate Group and Tranquility Through Therapy.

The event includes food trucks, children’s activities, local vendors and a Brimstone beer tent for adults 19 and older. It will feature its own fireworks show viewable from the park.

Tragically Hip tribute The Trip, fronted by Fort Erie singer John Genet, headlines the park from 7 to 10 p.m., and admission is free, though food from the trucks costs extra.
