Fort Erie commuters face lane closures on major routes this week

Fort Erie drivers will contend with a new round of construction and maintenance in the coming week, with lane reductions and ramp closures scheduled on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), Highway 405, Highway 406, Highway 58 and Highway 3.

Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation says several QEW ramps in Grimsby will be affected by engineering work.

The Toronto-bound on-ramp at Maple Avenue will have its right lane closed nightly starting at 9 p.m. on Tuesday and continuing until 5 a.m. on Friday. At the same interchange, the off-ramp onto Maple Avenue will close entirely from noon Tuesday until 5 a.m. Friday.

Just east of there, a similar investigation will close the right lane on the Ontario Street on-ramp in Grimsby each night from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 9 a.m. Friday. All three projects are classed as recurring construction or engineering investigations by Ontario 511.

Further east, crews will reduce the QEW to a single lane between Mountain Road and Thorold Stone Road in Niagara Falls each night from 11 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. October 6.

Drivers heading from St. Catharines toward Lincoln will encounter two left-lane closures between Seventh Street and Victoria Avenue. That work runs 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly from Monday through Friday.

A shorter daytime closure is planned Monday when maintenance crews close one left lane on the QEW Toronto-bound between Bowen Road, Fort Erie and Lyons Creek Road, Niagara Falls from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Other long-term projects will continue to affect Fort Erie commuters. One alternating lane remains closed in both directions of the QEW between Concession Road and Bowen Road as construction stretches toward December.

Similar lane reductions are in place on the off-ramp to Bertie Street/Thompson Road and between Ridgemount Road and Concession Road.

Highway 405 will see single-lane closures continue in both directions between the QEW and Stanley Avenue in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Construction that began in May isn’t expected to wrap up until late October.

Nearby, a maintenance project on Highway 406 southbound will close the left lane between Sir Isaac Brock Way and Beaverdams Road in Thorold from 9 p.m. Monday until 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Multiple lane reductions are scheduled on Highway 58 near Thorold. Ontario 511 says an engineering investigation will close the southbound right lane between Highway 406 and Thorold Stone Road/Davis Road each night from 11:59 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Friday.

A companion investigation will keep the southbound left lane closed from midnight Monday through 6 a.m. Friday. Motorists on the northbound lanes between Thorold Stone Road/Davis Road will lose one right lane during the day from 7 a.m. Monday to 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Highway 3 will remain closed in both directions this week between Killaly Street East and Highway 140/Elizabeth Street for resurfacing. The closure began September 25 and is scheduled to end at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

A separate lane reduction continues on Highway 3 westbound between Sherkston Road West/Neff Road and Killaly Street East, with one right lane closed until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead and consider alternate routes as crews work to complete these improvements.
