Prince of Wales Stakes returns to Fort Erie Race Track September 9

The Fort Erie Race Track will celebrate the 90th running of the Prince of Wales Stakes on September 9, bringing one of Canadian horse racing’s most iconic events back to the border oval.

The historic race is the second jewel in the OLG Canadian Triple Crown and will feature seven thoroughbreds competing on Fort Erie’s dirt track for a $400,000 prize.

Large crowds are expected to gather for the milestone event, which has been a fixture in town since 1959.

Mansetti, trained by Kevin Attard and ridden by 20-year-old jockey Pietro Moran, enters as the early favourite after winning the King’s Plate in August.

The horse is owned by father and son Al and Bill Ulwelling, who are seeking their second Prince of Wales victory.

“It’s a different surface but I don’t think it will matter with him because he’s such a talented horse,” said Moran in a Thursday news release.

Live racing begins at 1:30 p.m. and will also feature the Rondeau Bay Stakes and Lake Erie Stakes, along with Fort Erie’s own Molson Cup and Le Cinquieme Essai Cup.
