Waverly Beach remains unsafe for swimming

This final long weekend of summer, one public beach in Fort Erie remains unsafe for swimming, according to the latest test results from Niagara Region Public Health.
As of August 25, Waverly Beach was posted unsafe due to the presence of algae.
Bay Beach, Bernard Avenue Beach and Crescent Beach are all listed as safe for swimming, with the most recent tests conducted on August 19 and 26.
Niagara Region Public Health monitors more than 19 public beaches across the region each summer, from Victoria Day to Labour Day. Beaches are posted unsafe when test results show unacceptable levels of E. coli or when other hazards such as algae are identified.
Public health officials caution that water quality can change quickly due to factors such as heavy rainfall, high waves, large numbers of swimmers or birds, and cloudy water. Laboratory testing can also take more than a day to complete, meaning results may not reflect same-day conditions.
Exposure to unsafe water may cause stomach illness, rashes, and infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat.
Updates on beach water quality are available on the Niagara Region Public Health website.
