Town repairing watermain break on MacDonald Drive

A repair of a watermain break near homes along the waterfront is ongoing and expected to take place “all day,” according to a notice sent to Fort Erie Radio by the Town of Fort Erie on Tuesday morning.

The break occurred on MacDonald Drive between Bertie Bay and Stonemill roads.

According to Marty Biniasz, a seasonal resident on MacDonald Drive who alerted Fort Erie Radio about the break, said he believes it occurred sometime around midnight.

Asked about how it’s impacting people in the area, Biniasz said at about 10 a.m. that he had “no water pressure at all” while the work was taking place, and that he retreated back over the border until things are fixed.

“I had to go back to Buffalo to take a shower,” he said in an interview.

The town has yet to release more details about the cause of the break.

UPDATE | July 22, 2025 @ 2:48 p.m.: In a statement to Fort Erie Radio from town communications staff on behalf of the water and wastewater department, the break was described as “pretty significant.”

Breaks are typical in extreme cold and hot climates, the town added.

Crews assembled on site around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday and repairs are expected to last throughout most of the day, with the watermain hopefully back in service between 4 and 5 p.m.

The water supply disruption was caused by a 300-millimetre cast iron watermain break.

“There are no known food preparation, day, or elderly care facilities in the affected area,” the town said, adding that notice will be given when service is restored.
