NEXUS fees more than doubling to cover costs

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced that the application fee for the NEXUS program is set to rise from $50 to $120 USD on October 1, 2024.

According to the CBSA, this increase is necessary to cover the rising costs of administering the program and to invest in improvements such as technology and infrastructure upgrades. The new fee would work out to $24 USD per year for a five-year membership.

The CBSA is encouraging Canadians to apply for NEXUS as soon as possible due to the anticipated increase in demand before the fee hike.

The agency highlights that they have processed over 510,000 applications since April 2023 and are conducting nearly 10,000 interviews every two weeks.

There is some relief for those who have already submitted their application. Applicants who pay the current $50 USD fee before October 1, 2024, will not be subject to the new fee, even if their interview is scheduled after that date.

The CBSA acknowledges the rise in demand and assures that they are committed to streamlining the application process.

Over the past year, they have taken steps to reduce interview backlogs by 25 per cent, expanded service hours at enrolment centres (10 Central Ave.), and introduced new interview options.

Those Fort Erie residents interested in NEXUS can book their interview appointments through the Trusted Traveller Programs system. Many enrolment centres offer next-day interview scheduling for quicker processing.
