New Gilmore Lodge site holds official ribbon cutting ceremony

Officials gathered July 4 to celebrate the opening of the new Gilmore Lodge long-term care facility located at 60 King Street.

The $86-million facility replaces the former Gilmore Lodge in Fort Erie and Upper Canada Lodge in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

It features 160 beds across three storeys, designed to meet updated safety standards and the growing demand for long-term care.

Local dignitaries in attendance at the ribbon-cutting ceremony included Mayor Wayne Redekop, MPP Wayne Gates and Regional Councillor Tom Insinna.

“Today marks a significant milestone for Fort Erie and the Niagara Region, as…160 residents have a brand-new, modern place to call home,” said Ontario Minister of Long-Term Care Natalia Kusendova-Bashta in a Niagara Region news release on Friday.

According to Friday’s release, the Ontario government contributed $35 million to the project. Construction began in November 2021 and was completed in August 2024. The home began accepting residents in December.

The site also includes the Gilmore Community Hub, which offers adult day programs, a fitness area, meeting rooms, and shared amenities like a café and hair salon, open to both residents and community seniors.

“Gilmore Lodge is a place of care, comfort and connection,” said Redekop in the same release. “It will serve Fort Erie residents for generations to come.”

The facility was designed with input from residents, families and staff, and is pursuing WELL Silver certification for health and wellness in building design, says the Region.
