New Fort Erie family doctor takes on 2,500 patients

Dr. Oluwole Adeniyan said he expects to take on 2,500 patients at his new Jarvis Street clinic, or about one-fifth of the 12,000 Fort Erie residents Niagara Health said lacked a family doctor last year.

Jarvis Medical Clinic opens November 23 at 118 Jarvis Street, where residents can register as patients or walk in without an appointment.

Adeniyan also plans to work at the town’s short-staffed urgent care centre at Douglas Memorial Hospital. In January 2025, Niagara Health told the Town of Fort Erie it had contacted local family doctors and nurse practitioners about accepting more urgent care shifts but received no response or expression of interest.

“I know Douglas Memorial is taking the strain for the community, so I plan to do some shifts there as well,” Adeniyan told Fort Erie Radio.

Adeniyan’s urgent care work cannot start until Niagara Health finishes reviewing his credentials, a process he said is underway.

“I don’t think most of the other family physicians in the region get that luxury,” Adeniyan said of the chance to work at Douglas Memorial.

The clinic will provide immunizations and mental health care for patients of all ages, along with ongoing care for conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Adeniyan will also do blood tests on site and perform no-scalpel vasectomies, a procedure he specializes in.

Niagara Falls first attracted Adeniyan to the region, he said, before an opening for a clinic on Jarvis Street brought him to Fort Erie.

“The more I explore it, the more I fall in love with the region, especially Lake Erie and the view,” said Adeniyan.

Connecting with a “close-knit community” like Fort Erie mattered to Adeniyan because he said a doctor can make a bigger impact there than in a larger place.

OHIP will cover most services, but the clinic will charge fees for some, such as travel consultations and certain medical forms.

Walk-ins will be available at the clinic for non-emergency concerns that need quick attention.

The clinic will stay open until 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, so residents can see a doctor outside regular business hours without going to urgent care.

Residents without a family doctor can apply now for one of Adeniyan’s 2,500 patient spots through an online form on the clinic’s website.

Residents who prefer paper can pick up registration forms at the clinic, at 118 Jarvis Street, each morning starting November 16, a week before it opens, Adeniyan said.
