Minor Lacrosse Association holding free sessions to recruit new players

The Fort Erie Minor Lacrosse Association (FEMLA) is about to begin an 11-week campaign of recruiting interest in Canada’s national sport.
Starting February 23, through a partnership with the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre (FENFC), the association will be offering a “try lacrosse for free” program, giving young players the chance to perhaps take their first shot at a game they may not have ever played before.
A breakdown of age groups and what time the sessions are available to them, one hour at a time every Sunday leading up until early May, is available at forterielacrosse.com.
The weekly event will take place at the FENFC on Buffalo Road.
FEMLA secretary Tara Badali said registration “kind of declined” last year, and that the clinics at the Friendship Centre are meant to potentially instill a passion with kids who have not played lacrosse.
“The hope is that kids love it and want to continue,” she said.
The sessions are free but participants are asked to bring non-perishable food items for the Akwe:go and Urban Aboriginal Healthy Living Programs at FENFC.
The season starts at the end of April and there are house league options for the U7, U9 and other older age brackets.
The U5 division is strictly house league, said Badali.
