Meteors win 4-1 in home game supporting Circle Back Foundation

Fort Erie hockey fans witnessed a fast start Saturday night as the Meteors scored their first goal just 12 seconds in and carried that momentum to a 4-1 victory over the Caledonia Corvairs at the Leisureplex.

The game also marked a meaningful partnership with the Circle Back Foundation, a Fort Erie-based charity raising funds and awareness for colorectal cancer research. The organization honours the memory of Adam Joon, whose name appeared on special jerseys worn by the players and fans in the stands.

Circle Back co-founder Amanda Conlon told Fort Erie Radio the foundation began “after the loss of Samantha’s husband and [her] cousin, Adam Joon.”

“If you’re under the age of 50 in Canada, you cannot get screened for colorectal cancer, which is really silly,” said Samantha Schlosser, co-founder of Circle Back.

Schlosser said raising awareness is crucial because “it’s projected that colorectal cancer will be the leading cause of cancer death by the year 2030 in Canada.”

The foundation’s booth at the Leisureplex sold raffles, cookies, and at-home screening kits. Proceeds from all sales go toward national research and early-screening initiatives by Circle Back.

“All the funds that we raise, 100 per cent of the funds go into colorectal cancer research and awareness campaigns,” said Conlon.

The night drew an estimated 1,325 spectators, making it one of the team’s busiest games this season.

Head coach and general manager Nik Passero told Fort Erie Radio the partnership between the Meteors and Circle Back has a deeper purpose than just the fundraising.

“Our job here as a hockey team and organization is to build young men that care about more things other than hockey,” he said.

More information on Circle Back’s ongoing efforts and upcoming events is available through their website.

The Meteors set the tone for the game early when forward Sam Tonelli scored 12 seconds into the first period, assisted by Liam Nickerson and Danny Adamo.

Goaltender Finn Moffett kept the Meteors in the lead throughout the night, stopping some key shots from Caledonia and giving the team a strong outlook heading into the next stretch.

Fort Erie Radio is broadcasting all Meteors home games this season live from the Leisureplex.
