A man who crossed the Peace Bridge from Fort Erie into Buffalo has been arrested by U.S. authorities on an outstanding felony warrant from Texas.
According to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the 29-year-old Burmese citizen, a lawful permanent resident of the United States, was stopped on June 18 after crossing into Buffalo in a personal vehicle.
CBP officers at the port of entry discovered during a secondary inspection that he was wanted for violating probation on an original charge of continuous violence against the family, a third-degree felony, says the release.
The man told officers during initial questioning that he had no intention of entering Canada and had made a wrong turn onto the Peace Bridge.
A National Crime Information Center check revealed the active warrant, which was issued by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office on behalf of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office in Texas.
“I’m proud of our enforcement-minded CBP officers who continue to effectively leverage national law enforcement resources to identify and apprehend wanted fugitives,” said Rose Brophy, director of field operations for Buffalo. “Together with our law enforcement partners, we work hard to ensure violent fugitives like this are brought to justice.”
The man was turned over to the Buffalo Police Department as a fugitive from justice. He is awaiting extradition to Texas.
