Fort Erie record show spinning its third edition this Saturday

Dan General has been collecting vinyl records for close to 30 years because it has been part of his persona as a two-time Juno-winning DJ, also known as Shub.
His craft in recent years has been production-focused, but his earliest accolades came as a turntablist, scratching and beat juggling records to two Canadian Disco Mix Club (DMC) titles in 2007 and 2008.
A resident of Fort Erie, Shub said he thinks it’s fantastic that a record show being held three times a year in town has been successful.

Held at Sessions on the River, one record show was last November, and then another took place in February before the one planned for this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Shub said he mostly attends these types of events to comb through collections to find albums he can sample.
“It’s all part of the experience of digging,” said Shub.
“It’s either because it has crazy artwork, or you flip it around to see what type of instruments they play,” he added, referring to older and obscure titles that he may not have even heard before purchasing.
They’re also a great opportunity for average listeners to find something they’re looking for.
“You could go in there not looking for anything specific but come out with a ton of great stuff,” he said.
His teenage son started collecting records recently as well, and when Shub asked him why, his response was that it’s like a “piece of art.”
This is a sentiment Shub agrees with, especially in the digital world we live in, and how listening to vinyl means listening to whole albums and not “skipping tracks.”
Shub just released Heritage: Part 1, with the second half coming in the summer, available in a double-vinyl package, he said.
Lead organizer Craig Waters said the first two record shows were a success, even though the one in February competed with a significant snow storm that might have kept people home.
The event has raised $850 for Community Outreach Program Erie (COPE), Fort Erie’s food bank.
“I’d like to be able to get over $1,000,” he said.
There will be 10 vendors on hand Saturday, some from Niagara and others from the surrounding area.
He said a lot of new vinyl collectors seem to be surfacing, and he hopes they know that the atmosphere at the Fort Erie show is “not intimidating,” and that a solid reputation has been built since the first edition last year.
