Fort Erie’s DJ Shub looking ahead to a busy 2025

Dan General has “all kinds of things on the go” for next year.

This means he will be working hard out of his Fort Erie home studio for the next few months, putting finishing touches on a new album and getting his concert dates for 2025 organized with his management and booking agents.

Known in the music world as DJ Shub, General is a two-time Juno winner who lives in Fort Erie.

He won in 2014 as a member of A Tribe Called Red in the Breakthrough Artist of the Year category, before he eventually parted ways with the group to focus on creating music as a solo artist.

In 2022, he took home the top Canadian music award in the Contemporary Indigenous Artist of the Year category following the release of his most recent album ‘War Club.’

Last weekend, he wrapped up his scheduled dates for the year with a gig in Austin, TX, one of several he has played with someone he began idolizing as a teenager and hip-hop fan.

In Canada and the U.S. this year, he served as a DJ for Charlie 2na, a legendary figure in the underground rap scene in the 1990s and 2000s with his group Jurassic 5.

In an interview with Fort Erie Radio, General said this was his biggest thrill of 2024, a year where he played about 140 gigs in Canada and the U.S.

“I’ve always wanted to a DJ for a group,” he said, adding it’s “completely different” from how he normally performs, playing his own original music.

Also this year, Shub visited Norway. He was there for an event marking the release of a new stamp by the Norwegian government which features a photo of General and one of his dancers taken about seven years ago.

Shub started dabbling in turntablism in high school and eventually worked on it to the point that he was considered the best in the country by 2007, when he won the Disco Mix Club (DMC) Canadian finals, punching his ticket to the world finals in England.

He would win the Canadian finals again in 2008.

His music has been used in movies and on TV, including his track ‘Indomitable,’ which served as the opening for the critically-acclaimed show ‘Who is America?’ created by Sacha Baron Cohen.

While he has big plans for the future, the Fort Erie resident and father of two says he is humbled and thankful every day knowing that he’s earned a living as a professional musician for about 10 years.

“I still can’t believe I’m doing this as a full-time thing,” he said.

Shub said he can’t get into details about guest appearances on his next album, which will be released next year, but said the final product, along with how he will be upping the intensity of visuals during live shows, are both things he’s excited about.

He’s also thankful for his management and booking agents.

“They all hustle for me and are constantly finding new opportunities and opening doors,” he said.
