Fort Erie Radio long weekend barbecue builds community spirit

Randy Sherk came to Sunday’s community barbecue celebrating Fort Erie Radio’s second anniversary of live broadcasts at Legion Branch 71 on Garrison Road for three things: a hotdog, cold beer, and some music.

He also got a side order of community, to boot.

“People need to get out and meet others,” the longtime crossing guard said. “This brings people together.”

With Mother Nature cooperating and giving Fort Erie a beautiful Victoria Day weekend, hundreds lined up for a free hotdog or burger, and a chance to win some cool prizes courtesy of Fort Erie Radio and other local businesses.

And thanks to the community support, more than $800 was collected through donations and a 50/50 raffle with all proceeds to support Community Living Fort Erie.

“This is an opportunity for us to give back to a community that has so wholeheartedly embraced us,” said Brent Jones, program director for Fort Erie Radio.

Jones said he was grateful to the Fort Erie Legion for once again hosting the anniversary barbecue and the support they provided to make the afternoon a success.

With two years in the books, Jones–who hosts Fort Erie Radio’s morning show alongside Brenda Tyrrell–said he’s been amazed at just the sheer number of stories there are to tell in Fort Erie. While he always knew the community was lively, the past two years have shown him just how lively it really is.

As the station heads full throttle into year three, Jones said that will continue to be the focus for his team.

“We’ll continue to tell the stories that matter to the people of Fort Erie, particularly in an election year,” he said, referring to this October’s municipal elections.
