Fort Erie Radio grand opening an opportunity to give back

It’ll soon be a chance to connect faces to the voices Fort Erie Radio (FER) listeners have been hearing for the past month.

The new local internet radio station will be holding a grand opening ribbon cutting at its 43 Queen Street location on Friday, June 21. In addition to celebrating the start of the new operation, staff will also be collecting non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products for Strong Fort Erie Neighbourhoods (SFEN) and Community Outreach Program Erie (COPE).

“I see a lot of grand opening photos on social media and it’s always nice to have businesses opening up in our town. But our station staff and hosts and I, we all thought we could use our ribbon cutting as an excuse to do something good for the community,” said Brent Jones, program director at FER.

“All non-perishables will be going to COPE while the hygiene products will be headed to the personal products bank at Strong Fort Erie Neighbourhoods. There are so many great causes in our town and these are two we all felt passionate about.”

Representatives from both SFEN and COPE are expected to be in attendance.

FER launched earlier this spring. In addition to playing a mix of rock music from the 1970s through to the 2000s, local hosts keep listeners entertained and educated, while a team of journalists keep Fort Erie residents up-to-date on the latest things happening in town.

The grand opening and ribbon cutting runs from 10 to 11 a.m. on June 21. In addition to supporting two worthy causes, visitors will also receive free FER swag. Local dignitaries are expected to be on hand as well.

And those who donate food and hygiene products will be entered into a draw. Prizes include a year of free oil changes from Garrison Automotive Service, a gift basket of hardware and tools from Turkstra Lumber, and four free rounds of golf at the Fort Erie Golf Club.

FER staff and hosts will also be available to greet visitors.

“Let’s hope for some nice weather because that always helps. But rain or shine, let’s come together as a community for a fun day and do some good at the same time,” Jones said.
