The Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium (FELRC), which has operated the Fort Erie Race Track for the past 16 years, says it is moving ahead with planning for its 2026-27 live racing season, even as contract talks remain underway with key stakeholders including Ontario Racing, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and the Province of Ontario.
“The province has been a good partner these past seven years,” said FELRC CEO Jim Thibert in a Monday news release.
“And with more than 10 years still remaining in the province’s 19-year commitment to the horse racing industry, we should continue to enjoy a good working relationship that encourages a strong and healthy horse racing industry into the future, commensurate with their funding commitments.”
As one of Niagara’s key summer tourism attractions, the track contributes significantly to Fort Erie’s local economy.
Mayor Wayne Redekop reinforced the town’s interest.
“The Destination Niagara initiative…envisions a comprehensive tourism experience, beyond the traditional focus on Niagara Falls, that offers unique attractions, including Fort Erie Race Track,” he said in the release.
The track says it supports more than 125 full-time employees, several hundred horsepeople and nearly 300 indirect jobs in the tariff-free horse-racing industry.
In 2024 alone, wagering at the track reached approximately $42.5 million–the second-highest handle in FELRC history–resulting in over $8.5 million in direct spending and further contribution to the local economy, according to the organization’s Corporate Responsibility Report.

Off-season capital investments at the facility, including new pavement in the parking area, a new roof for the grandstand and a new tote board, also supported local trades and contractors ahead of this year’s 90th running of the Prince of Wales Stakes.
Thibert emphasized the track’s broader role.
“Fort Erie Race Track is more than a venue for horse racing; it’s the heartbeat of our local economy and a beacon for tourists seeking authentic Canadian experiences,” he said in the release.
The track and its employees now look forward to welcoming fans, horsepeople and visitors in the spring for the 129th season of live racing.
