Runaway Again upsets favourite Mansetti to win Prince of Wales Stakes

Runaway Again edged the favourite, Mansetti, by half a length to win the 90th Prince of Wales Stakes at the Fort Erie Race Track on Tuesday evening.

Sent off as the second-longest shot on the board, Runaway Again rallied under jockey Ryan Munger to overtake King’s Plate winner Mansetti in the stretch.

Mansetti set the pace and held a clear lead on the far turn before Runaway Again drew within range and prevailed at the wire, according to a Fort Erie Race Track news release. The winner is trained by Sid Attard for owner Stronach Stables.

“He’s a quirky horse,” Munger said in the release. “You can’t bully him. He doesn’t like to be told what to do, so you have to kind of treat him like your wife or your girlfriend. You have to be very, very nice to him, and he’ll be nice back to you.”

Munger also noted Runaway Again’s light racing history–only two starts before Tuesday–saying “he’s got no miles on him,” and that the colt was “physically perfect.”

Runaway Again paid $18.50 to win, $8 to place and $4.30 to show. Total wagering on the card reached $2.85 million, the fourth-largest handle in track history and just shy of last year’s $3.03 million despite one fewer race, the track said.

Earlier on the program, jockey Sofia Vives posted back-to-back stakes victories in the Ontario Sire Heritage Series, winning the Rondeau Bay Stakes with Takemybourbonneat for owner ICON Racing Stables and trainer Anthony Adamo, and the Lake Erie Stakes with Go Kart Mozart for trainer Robert Tiller and owner Frank Di Giulio.

The Prince of Wales Stakes is the second jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown.

Live racing continues Mondays and Tuesdays at the Fort Erie Race Track through to October 21.
