Fort Erie ban on open-air burning remains during poor air quality

Campfires are currently prohibited in Fort Erie as poor air quality conditions continue in the area.

The Town of Fort Erie posted this week that open-air burning is prohibited, originally pointing to a heat advisory.

That heat advisory has since ended, but Fire Chief Mark Schmitt told Fort Erie Radio the restriction still applies under the town’s open-air burning bylaw because of current air quality conditions.

Schmitt said by email the bylaw bans burning during active heat advisories, smog alerts or when wind speeds may create safety hazards.

“Campfires are prohibited,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt said other Class A burning devices used for cooking, including charcoal and biomass stoves, are still permitted.

Citronella candles are also permitted.

The town says open-air burning restrictions include the burning of brush, yard waste, leaves, wood and other materials.

Burning brush, yard waste, construction materials, garbage and similar materials is prohibited at all times under the town’s burning rules.

The town says violations may result in fines or penalties under the burning bylaw.
