Fort Erie under heat warning as humidex climbs to 45

Fort Erie is under a heat warning until at least Wednesday evening, with humidex values expected to reach as high as 45 at the peak of the event Tuesday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued the warning Monday for southern Niagara. It marks the second stretch of extreme heat to hit the region in just over a week.

Fort Erie’s forecast calls for a high of 32 C Tuesday with a humidex of 40, while some areas of southwestern Ontario and the Greater Golden Horseshoe could reach 37 C. Overnight lows of 20 to 24 C will offer little relief.

The heat warning is expected to end either Wednesday evening or Thursday evening.

Environment Canada warns the hot, humid air can also degrade air quality, pushing the Air Quality Health Index toward the high-risk category.

Extreme heat can affect anyone, and residents are urged to check on older adults, people living alone and others at greater risk several times a day. Early signs of heat exhaustion include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that requires a 911 call.

Niagara Transit offers free rides to designated cooling sites during official heat warnings, and the town’s splash pads and library branches remain open to the public.

The forecast calls for a chance of showers Wednesday, with highs easing to 27 C by Friday.
