FENFC offering language class to ‘anyone that’s interested’

It takes time and dedication to learn a language, and the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre (FENFC) is here to help.
On Friday, a day of beginner Anishinaabemowin instruction will take place, an opportunity to learn more about how to speak Ojibwe.
It’s for non-Indigenous and Indigenous people alike, individuals who already have a solid foundation in the language, as well as those who are just starting.
“It’s definitely something anyone that’s interested can access,” said Ashley Nadon, Indigenous language co-ordinator and Ojibwe language teacher at FENFC, which is located at 796 Buffalo Road.

How to enunciate vowels and correctly say terms are part of the beginner’s program, said Nadon, including terms such as Haudenosaunee, one commonly used by non-Indigenous people when land acknowledgments are read locally.
There is a “a basis in which you build on,” she said.
The event runs September 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there are a handful of spots remaining. Those interested can register at language@fenfc.org.
Starting in October, FENFC will begin to offer classes that teach seven Indigenous languages.
