‘Elbows Up’ organizers from Buffalo invite Canadians to join them

Fort Erie and the rest of Canada have plenty of friends in Buffalo.

Earlier this year, hundreds of people gathered along the breakwall near the Peace Bridge as a group of Americans on the other side held a protest in solidarity with their neighbours and in opposition to President Donald Trump’s tariffs and threats of annexation.

As part of rallies being held coast-to-coast along the border on July 5, a group will host another ‘Elbows Up’ for Canada rally.

They will gather at Freedom Park on the U.S. side and Canadians are encouraged to do the same, also at Freedom Park along Niagara Parkway.

Michael Powers, an organizer in Buffalo, said the two Freedom parks were chosen because they represent the “closest gap” along the river.

“We’ve been neighbours for so long,” he told Fort Erie Radio, adding “not all of us feel the same way they seem to at the White House.”

“Canada is its own sovereign nation, and has long been one of America’s closest allies, repeatedly giving aid, from September 11th to the recent California fires, among countless examples,” says a news release about the event.

This day of action involves many partner organizations and groups across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, including We the People Dissent (Detroit, MI), Peace Love and a Handshake (Bellingham, WA), Power to the People-Upstate NY (Buffalo), Good Neighbors Getting It Done In Western New York (Buffalo), Arrowhead Indivisible (Moorhead, MN), Indivisible Montana (Butte, MT), Sandpoint Indivisible (Idaho), Indivisible Ottawa, Democrats Abroad Toronto, Democrats Abroad Montreal, and Indivisible London UK.

Organizers said in the release that they will “peacefully rally” on the U.S. side beginning at 11 a.m.
