Charity barbecue on August 24 in Stevensville supporting two causes

A charity barbecue later this month will support two causes.

Hosted by MKS Fences & More, the event takes place August 24 at 3947 West Main Street in Stevensville, and will raise money for Happy Days Sanctuary, a registered non-profit organization in Stevensville that rescues neglected farm animals near the Welland border.

Food donations will be given to COPE.

“We love our community, and we would like to help raise awareness and donations,” says a Facebook page about the event.

The idea started when Karrie Nelson and Steve Ewing’s four-year-old daughter Mabel attended a grand opening for West Mane Hair, a salon next to her family’s home, who had Happy Days Sanctuary representatives at their event.

The family “didn’t know they existed,” said Nelson, adding they decided as a family that this organization should benefit from an event they organize.

“It starts at home, and children only know what they’ve learned,” she said about instilling a mindset of helping others with her young daughter.

“It’s great what they do,” she said about Happy Days, also encouraging people to bring food donations.

The event starts at noon and ends when the food is gone, says the event page.

Hot dogs and sausages are two dollars, and pop and water will be sold for one dollar. A free sugar cookie will also be provided with each purchase.

A rain date is set for the next day, August 25.
