Battle on the court: FEIA women’s basketball team takes on undefeated Crestwood Lions

Tuesday night, the Fort Erie International Academy (FEIA) women’s team took on the Crestwood Preparatory College (CPC) Lions at 6 p.m. Crestwood is the top ranked team in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA). They are undefeated this season and are looking to win back-to-back OSBA championships.

CPC is led by two all-stars, one being Toby Fournier who is committed to Duke University. She is considered one of the best young female basketball players in Canada and is nationally ranked on the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network (ESPN).

The second is Agot Makeer, a talented scorer who averages 19 points and 7 rebounds per game in the OSBA. She has racked up several Division I offers and is only in her junior year.

The Lions and Falcons met earlier this season at FEIA for the Grind Session, which is an international prep circuit for elite level teams. The Falcons ended up falling short that game, losing by 15. Keyarah Gregory, who is the starting point guard for the Falcons, was not in attendance.

To start Tuesday night’s game, the FEIA Falcons went on a 7-0 run. They were confident and came out with the right energy despite playing on Crestwood’s home court. The teams battled back and forth throughout the first half, with the Lions up 40-38 at halftime.

The Lions started off hot in the second half hitting four threes in a row, causing the Falcons to trail by 14 at one point. The score was 65-58 heading into the last quarter.

The Falcons fought hard, despite what some saw as favouritism from certain refs. Two of FEIA’s starters fouled out, leaving the team to carry on with a shorter lineup. After a valiant effort, FEIA ultimately fell short to the defending champions, losing the match 90-80.

Next up, the Falcons women’s team will be having their senior night for the final home game of the season.
