The Fort Erie Cannons men’s senior baseball team was founded 20 years ago, but there are two new squads under the Cannons banner this season.
Beginning last fall, training has been taking place to put together lineups for Under 9 and Under 13 teams in the Fort Erie Cannons travel program.
Both groups will host home openers on adjacent diamonds at Oakes Park on June 6, and are inviting the community to come out and celebrate.
The Under 9 team plays at 6 p.m. and the Under 13 team will see a first pitch at 7 p.m.
Fluffy the Clown will be working the crowd and there will be food trucks, vendors, and merchandise for sale.
“It’s taken quite the effort to get this program off the ground,” said Adam Molnar, a former player on the men’s senior team who is now vice-president of the new travel teams.
He hopes that more squads will be added in the coming years.
“Our goal is to eventually have teams in every age group,” he said.
The teams are sanctioned by the Ontario Baseball Association and are governed locally by the Niagara District Baseball Association.
Justin Hall, manager of the men’s team and son of the late Clayton (C.A.) Hall, who founded the team in 2005, is also a member of the Greater Fort Erie Minor Ball board.
Molnar said this is a way the program will collaborate with the local house league circuit, also offering clinics to its players in the near future.
He hopes this will grow an “interest in baseball” in Fort Erie.
The Under 9 squad uses a pitching machine in games, something that is new to baseball in town, according to Molnar, who also added that the last time travel baseball was offered locally was more than 20 years ago.
The organization is thankful for its many sponsors who have supported the cause, allowing a “fair price” for registration and other forms of assistance.
Both travel teams are headed to a tournament in London, Ont., this weekend.
During the regular season, they will face teams from Niagara as well as Hamilton.
