Adult male found dead, recovered from Niagara River near Phipps Street

Police shut down part of the Niagara Parkway near Phipps Street in Fort Erie around 11 a.m. Wednesday after the body of a deceased adult male was found in the Niagara River.

The closure near Bertie Hall disrupted traffic along a busy stretch of the riverfront and raised public concern in the community. The area was taped off as police recovered the body from the riverbank, with the forensics unit on scene.

Niagara Regional Police Service told Fort Erie Radio 5 District uniform officers and detectives assisted Niagara Parks Police after the discovery.

“At this time, foul play is not suspected,” said Stephanie Sabourin, manager of corporate communications for Niagara Regional Police Service, in an email.

Niagara Parkway was closed by police order between Dufferin Street and Emerick Avenue.

Police said the cause of death has not yet been determined as the investigation continues.

Roads reopened later Wednesday and police said there is no risk to public safety in connection to this incident.
