A 35-year old man from Niagara Falls was arrested on Monday in connection with a series of alleged criminal incidents throughout the region, according to a news release issued Tuesday by Niagara Regional Police.
Police say officers located the man hiding in the attic of a Crystal Beach residence. He was arrested without incident.
The accused was wanted on several outstanding warrants at the time of the arrest. He now faces numerous charges including multiple counts of failing to comply with a release order and probation, flight from police, dangerous operation, operating a conveyance while prohibited, break and enter, theft of a motor vehicle, and possession of property obtained by crime.
Additional charges include assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
The arrest stems from an investigation that began on June 17 after two trailers were reported stolen from a car dealership in Welland. Through investigative efforts, police identified a suspect, who they say had since been involved in 19 police-related occurrences and was actively evading arrest.
According to the release, on four occasions during attempts to arrest the suspect, police vehicles were intentionally struck, causing significant damage.
No injuries to officers or members of the public were reported.
The accused appeared in court by video link on Tuesday for a bail hearing and was remanded into custody. The hearing was held at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be laid. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at (905) 688-4111, option 3, extension 1003306.
