Bay Beach and Waverly Beach once again unsafe for swimming

Bay Beach is once again considered unsafe for swimming due to high E. coli levels.

There are four public beaches in Greater Fort Erie tested by Niagara Region Public Health and half have been flagged, according to testing that took place on Thursday.

Waverly Beach is also listed as unsafe on the Region’s website.

Bernard Avenue Beach and Crescent Beach are considered safe, which may offer Fort Erie residents some relief throughout the heat warning currently issued by Environment Canada.

Signage is posted at all four spots reminding visitors to check the Region’s website for up-to-date conditions.

Bay Beach, the popular swimming hole in the tourism-driven Crystal Beach area, has been deemed both safe and unsafe for swimming multiple times this summer.

According to public health guidelines, water is considered unsafe for swimming when bacteria levels exceed thresholds that increase the risk of illness, such as stomach cramps, diarrhea and skin infections.

Testing is conducted regularly throughout the summer at public beaches across the region. Water conditions can change quickly due to weather, wave activity, wildlife, and other factors.
