Canal closures, other highway construction planned this week

Temporary closures spanning the Welland Canal will cause delays for Fort Erie commuters at multiple locations and times this week:

  • On Monday, the Mellanby Avenue Bridge in Port Colborne will be closed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • The Glendale Avenue Bridge in St. Catharines will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
  • On Wednesday, the Allanburg Bridge in Thorold and Carlton Street Bridge in St. Catharines will not be open to traffic between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • The Clarence Street Bridge in Port Colborne will be closed on Friday from 8 a.m. to noon as well as the Mellanby Avenue Bridge from noon to 4 p.m.

There will also be several spots along the QEW where work is taking place this week, such as Toronto bound between Victoria Avenue in Lincoln and Christie Street/Lakeview Avenue in Grimsby, causing alternating lane closures, according to Ontario 511, the province’s traffic information website.

The Fort Erie-bound on-ramp at Martindale Road in St. Catharines will be closed.

There will also be lane closures headed toward Toronto between Lake and Seventh streets in St. Catharines.

On Highway 406 northbound, motorists will see work at Highway 20/Canboro Road and the Gibson Lake bridge in Thorold.

Also northbound on Highway 406, work will be taking place between Merritt Road and Highway 20/Canboro Road.

The southbound on-ramp at Highway 20/Canboro Road is slated to be closed due to work.

Work will also cause delays northbound on Highway 406 at Beaverdams Road.

Closures also continue on Highway 58 near the Thorold Tunnel and Pine Street.

On Highway 405, there will be construction both directions in the area of Stanley Avenue and the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge in Niagara-on-the-Lake, as well as at the QEW and Stanley Avenue.
