Volunteer firefighter applications open until August 29

The Fort Erie Fire Department is accepting applications for volunteer firefighters until August 29.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, and live full-time in Fort Erie, according to a job posting published on the Town of Fort Erie’s website.

A valid, unrestricted Class G driver’s licence is required, and candidates must be willing to upgrade to a DZ licence.

Applicants must also pass a medical exam, complete the Candidate Physical Aptitude Test (CPAT), and provide a satisfactory police background check through Niagara Regional Police.

Those selected must successfully complete a six-month recruit training program followed by a 12-month probationary period, according to the Town’s volunteer firefighters information page.

Training takes place on weekends and some weeknights and includes certification in emergency first aid, CPR, vehicle extrication, hazardous materials handling, water rescue and other core skills.

In a statement to Fort Erie Radio, Fire Chief Mark Schmitt said volunteer firefighters are “crucial to communities of our size.”

In addition to fighting fires, Schmitt emphasized that local firefighters “perform water rescue, rescue at automobile accidents, medical aid, as well as assist other agencies like police and paramedics.”

Graduates of the program will receive NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2 certification.

Volunteer firefighters receive an annual honourarium based on participation in training, emergency calls and community events, and are covered by life and accident insurance, according to the Town.
