SIU to investigate after dirt bike rider injured fleeing police in Fort Erie

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) will look into an incident that occurred in the area of Albany and Beatrice streets early Sunday morning.

At about 1:20 a.m., Niagara Regional Police (NRP) responded to reports of an alleged impaired driver.

Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop involving a dirt bike, but the driver fled at a high rate of speed. A pursuit was not initiated.

Shortly thereafter, officers located a nearby male with injuries, NRP spokesperson Stephanie Sabourin told Fort Erie Radio in a statement.

The individual was treated at the scene and transported to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

As a result of the injuries, the SIU was notified and will be investigating, said Sabourin.

No further details can be released by police at this time, she added.

Fort Erie Radio observed a police presence in the area until early afternoon on Sunday.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
