Handgun and drugs seized after single-vehicle collision early Monday

A 21-year-old faces a total of 12 drug and weapons charges following a single-vehicle collision in Fort Erie early Monday morning.

A news release issued by Niagara Regional Police (NRP) Tuesday afternoon says that at about 4:45 a.m., police responded to the area of Helena Street and Garrison Road for a call for service.

Initial investigation revealed that there was a single motor vehicle collision resulting in a grey Buick striking a street post and flipping over.

Further investigation revealed that an individual involved in the collision was in possession of a Glock firearm, 27.4 grams of suspected fentanyl, 111.3 grams of suspected cocaine, 14 tablets of suspected oxycodone, 234.6 grams of suspected cannabis, and $100 in Canadian currency.

The estimated street value of the drugs seized was approximately $18,000, says the NRP.

The suspect was charged with unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, unauthorized possession of a prohibited device, careless storage of a firearm, careless storage of ammunition, multiple counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000, as well as several Cannabis Act related charges.

The 21-year-old, whose gender was not provided in the NRP news release, was held in custody and attended court in St. Catharines on Monday and was remanded into custody.
