Digital Golf Fort Erie in full swing and accepting tee time reservations

Local residents who have the itch to golf year round have a reason to celebrate.

On Thursday, the grand opening of Digital Golf Fort Erie was held, boasting two rooms where virtual rounds can be played on a list of world-famous courses.

Mike Douglas is a member at Bridgewater Country Club and was at the new business on Thursday playing a few holes at Pebble Beach.

He said it’s a great way to get prepared for the upcoming season.

“Just to come in once a week and get your swings in, you’ll be one step ahead when you get out there this year,” he said, joking that some years it takes him until August to feel comfortable at the tee.

Digital Golf Fort Erie is owned by Dave and Janice Sherk.

Dave said they expect to be very busy six months of the year and in the summer, could generate business by holding leagues at the facility at 1318 Dominion Road, located next to Crafted 1885.

He agreed there are a few reasons virtual golf can be appealing. It can replace a rain day in the summer and also be a chance to beat the extreme heat in an air-conditioned setting. There isn’t a lot of walking for people with mobility issues, and the price is right as well.

To play in the room with a large curved screen that holds up to eight golfers, it is $70 per hour for a group of four.

For five to six players, the cost is $87.50 per group, and $105 split between seven to eight golfers.

The widescreen room, which holds up to four golfers, is $50 an hour.

“If you have 12 people, you can book the whole thing,” Sherk told Fort Erie Radio in an interview at Thursday’s grand opening.

There is also a Digital Golf Niagara Falls on Victoria Avenue. They are not part of a franchise but are affiliated, he said.

Regional Councillor Tom Insinna, a regular golfer, could be overheard booking a session for this Sunday before he delivered remarks to everyone in attendance on Thursday.

He’s pleased he doesn’t have to travel out of town to golf in the offseason anymore.

“I don’t have to go to Niagara Falls or Welland. I can come here,” he said.

Mayor Wayne Redekop said he was a better caddy than he was golfer in his younger years, and congratulated the new business on behalf of the Town of Fort Erie.

He pointed out that there were a number of representatives in attendance from various levels of government who wear different political stripes, all of whom still share something in common.

“We all want to support the businesses in our community,” said Redekop.
