Six swimmers from GFESS headed to OFSAA finals in Toronto next month

Six aquatic athletes from Greater Fort Erie Secondary School (GFESS) are heading to a provincial championship next month.

The success started when the team of 17 from the swim team tallied the most points in the Zone 3 championship, advancing to the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) finals at Brock University on February 11.

At that competition, six local GFESS swimmers performed at a high enough level to move on to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) meet, which will be held in Toronto early next month.

“Everyone swam their best and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship,” said Sandra Mackenzie, one of the coaches, in a post on Facebook.

Rookie swimmer Quinn Rungi-Ruston won the junior boys 50-metre backstroke, making him the SOSSA Champion.

Ksenia Rungi-Ruston, Harper James, William Connor, Tommy MacAurtur and Connor Saari also qualified to compete at the OFSAA championships next month.

What follows is a breakdown of how each of the advancing athletes fared at SOSSA:

In the junior boys medley, William Connor, Tommy MacAurthur, Quinn Rungi-Ruston and Connor Saari placed second.

Along with Quinn Rungi-Ruston’s first-place finish in the 50-metre backstroke, William Connor placed third.

Quinn Rungi-Ruston also placed second in the junior boys 50-metre breaststroke.

In the senior girls 50-metre freestyle category, Ksenia Rungi-Ruston placed second and Harper James placed fourth. In the senior girls 50-metre butterfly, they placed third and fourth.
