GFESS swim team dominates Zone 3, prepares for SOSSA at Brock

A team of 17 athletes from Greater Fort Erie Secondary School (GFESS) are on their way to competing at the next level after a great achievement last month.

The high school’s swim team recently won the Combined Zone 3 championship, meaning that points earned in individual events added up to a championship title.

GFESS was one of more than a dozen schools competing in Zone 3, which covers the south end of Niagara.

Three first place finishes from swimmers Harper James, Ksenia Rungi-Ruston and Quinn Rungi-Ruston, played a major role in the team championship and the total number of points racked up.

Coaches Sandra Mackenzie and Kerry Brisbois are thrilled with the team effort and how they handle success.

“The best part is that they cheer everybody on,” said Brisbois, adding the team consists of a “great group of kids” who “show up with a great attitude” every day.

Brisbois said this is the first time GFESS has won the combined title.

The team will head to the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) championships at Brock University on February 11, competing against schools from four zones from Niagara and Hamilton.

Mackenzie said all the swimmers are “so dedicated” and “continue to strive to beat their personal best times at particles and at meet to meet.”

Success at SOSSA would lead to competing at the Ontario Federation of School Athletics Association (OFSAA) championships in Toronto in early March.
