Man charged with attempted murder after injuring police officer

Niagara Regional Police (NRP) have provided more information about an incident that occurred on the weekend that left an officer seriously injured.

Police responded on Saturday afternoon to an address on Spears Road North for a domestic disturbance.

An officer had to be transported to an out-of-town hospital with serious injuries and was in stable condition.

A suspect was also transferred to hospital in stable condition.

On Tuesday, the NRP said a 45-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the incident.

The male, who is not named by police, is charged with attempted murder, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, impaired driving causing bodily harm, two counts of uttering threats, and careless storage of a firearm.

Police also seized a Savage 410 shotgun from a residence in Fort Erie, said the news release on Tuesday.

The female victim did not sustain any injuries, police added.

The officer remains in hospital recovering from serious injuries sustained during this incident.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing and was remanded back into custody.

This incident also remains under investigation by the Ontario Special Investigations Unit.
