Speed camera housing intact on Central, no active device inside

Just because there is a box sitting atop of a pole along Central Avenue where a speed enforcement camera previously existed, it doesn’t mean there is one still there taking shots of licence plates.
Niagara uses a combination of two different automated speed enforcement camera types, said Janet Rose, a communications consultant for the Region.
Some are installed with a permanent fixed housing on a pole and some use a roadside mobile unit.
“Once installed fixed housings remain in place at all times, even if the camera itself is temporarily removed and rotated to another location. It is not feasible to install and remove fixed housing equipment each time a camera is rotated,” she said.
When cameras are active in a Community Safety Zone there will always be “Municipal Speed Cameras In Use” signs displayed at each end of the Zone. The signage is removed when cameras are not active.
Drivers can watch for road signs to confirm when speeding violations are being ticketed by automated enforcement or refer to the Region’s website for current camera locations.
Signage that used to be posted along Central Avenue near Our Lady Victory Catholic School is no longer standing.
“Our data shows that reductions in speed continue to be seen in Community Safety Zones even when cameras are no longer present. This was an anticipated result of implementing the program,” said Rose.
There are now eight locations in Niagara where speed cameras will be operating until April, but none are in Fort Erie.
They will be activated January 14.
