Fluctuating temperatures and potential snow in Fort Erie’s forecast

A “seesaw battle” between Arctic and mild air masses originating from the deep south of the U.S. will be a factor in the local weather forecast over the next 10 days, says Environment Canada and Climate Change meteorologist Geoff Coulson.
Lake-effect snow will not have much of an impact Thursday and Friday as it is expected to in the Georgia Bay and Lake Huron areas.
But the south Buffalo area could be in for a second consecutive weekend of lake-effect snow, which may result in flurries in south Niagara on the Canadian side of the border, even though the current forecast is showing a mix of sun and clouds.
Early next week, Niagara will experience mild air with a high of 6C, above the normal seasonal high of 4C.
“It looks like that contrast and flipping around is going to continue as we go through the month of December,” Coulson told Fort Erie Radio in an interview Wednesday after snow from earlier in the day had stopped, but then resumed in the evening hours.
There will be a lot of “hit and miss” with forecasts.
He said these changing conditions hopefully don’t get “people lulled,” thinking that they are getting a break from winter.
It’s also possible there will be rain before temperatures return back closer to the freezing mark.
“That means driving conditions could be slippery when folks aren’t expecting it,” he said, noting that roads may be covered with black ice when it gets colder.
Coulson said the proliferation of weather apps and conditions being readily available at people’s fingertips through radar is a useful tool.
“It’s very worthwhile this time of year to keep referring back to that radar,” he said.
